Discworld Monthly - Issue 261 February 2019

Issue 261

1. Editorial

Welcome to the February 2019 issue of Discworld Monthly - we've got quite a lot of Good Omens and Troll Bridge news to bring you this month (and some we can't tell you about but would like to - so that will have to wait) .

So, finally, we've got a date for Good Omens - Friday 31st May is going to be a unplug all phones day for us here while we binge watch all six episodes! We can't wait to see how lush the whole thing will look.

A second trailer for the series is due to hit within the next 7-10 days so hopefully it will tease rather than give too much away.

Troll Bridge appears to be building traction with more and more festivals picking up either the normal 25 minutes version or the specially cut down for festival version of just 16 minutes. At 25 minutes it appears to be too long for some festivals to consider a short film! We look forward to making it to the UK premiere whenever that gets announced. (Hopefully soon)

* * * * *

You may have noticed the lack of reviews this month, and that's because we included them all last month! Hopefully people will be visiting some of the plays listed later in this issue and will write us some nice reviews. If you'd like to have your review published in this esteemed organ (as described by Mr Bernard Pearson) email your review with the subject matter "Article/Review" to

Also if you have something you'd like to chat with other fans about, why not send us a readers' letter, to

We took Rincewind to the Cardiff Anime and Comic Convention last month (Rincewind being the star of The Colour of Magic graphic novel) and entered him (me) into the maskerade. Given that most of the entries were from the manga / anime genres I was pleasantly surprised to win third place.

It's always fun having people recognise the costume to prove that Terry hasn't been forgotten (especially by the stall holders and slightly more mature people at the event) - though I did get called Gandalf more than once - but that may be the grey creeping into my beard.

* * * * *

At the end of next month Rachel and I will be heading over to the Irish Discworld Convention - this will be a new experience for us as we've never been to any Conventions outside of the UK. We are looking forward to being involved with the event and will even be doing a talk about Discworld Monthly at the event. Come along if you can. We'll let you know how it went when / if we get back into the UK as the event takes place over Brexit weekend!

2. News

2.1 Armageddon will occur on 31st May 2019 !

By the now converted Rachel

Last issue I said this "So here we all are sat around, waiting for an announcement that will come approximately two days after we publish just to prove that Crowley does indeed screw with us for giggles."

Ok, it wasn't just two days but a whole three weeks before Amazon Prime made the announcement that Good Omens would premiere on the 31st May 2019. Huzzah!

There has been lots of little teaser items all over Twitter and the internet. I'm not going to tell you what they contain because that spoils all the fun, but I will list the places you should go and visit.

On Twitter : @chattering_nuns , @King_Aziraphale , @GoodOmensPrime , @neilhimself , @drmuig and of course on our own, @dwmoook .

On the internet thingmabob the most interesting marketing ploy is the website of The Chattering Order of the St Beryl. They have little breadcrumbs of information staring you in the face. It is also worth ringing their number if you live in the USA and also signing up for their newsletter, Go and visit them at the The Chattering Order of the St Beryl website.

The new casting news is that Benedict Cumberbatch is going to be playing Satan in the series. I won't be telling you anything more about that because Google is far better at giving you the same info over and over and over and over just like Crowley designed it to.

At the BBC Showcase recently, Neil Gaiman appeared like the face of God on the big screen to inform everyone of a few things.

One of the things that he said that stood out as far as we are concerned was this little snippet about why he dedicated himself to adapting and making the Good Omens TV series.

"I didn't in any real sense of the word have two years of my life to give up to make this, so I wouldn't have done it if Terry hadn't died and given me this as his last request," Neil added "Terry's wish trumped everything, so we were making it for him" and then Neil teased that "the very last thing that happens on the final screen of episode six is just for Terry." [Sushi restaurant scene perhaps? - Rachel]

We also thought this bit about how much he misses Terry was worth noting.

Neil stated that he missed being able to call Terry, as he had during the writing of the book, to talk through things. He said he had used a lot of the material that the pair had discussed for use in possible sequels to the Good Omens novel in the TV series.

"That stuff allowed us to actually solve some of the problems involved in putting it on television – the fact that we have Jon Hamm as the impossibly irritating angel Gabriel is something from the sequel we slid back in – as was the relationship between heaven and hell, where we keep going back and forth between these two appalling places,"

Good Omens will be delightful and baffling as it cannot be put into any single genre, but Neil did say that "It isn't like anything else, the problem that we keep having when people say 'what's it like' is they want us to compare it to something, and we don't have anything to compare it to."

So what can I tell you that most other websites can't? Well truth be told, the answer is nothing spectacular other than what's above, but I can give you a FAQ as so many are asking questions of us online about the series.

Good Omens FAQ.

The important one.

Question - WHERE CAN I WATCH GOOD OMENS as I live in the back end of beyond?

Answer - Prime Video aka Amazon Prime. Currently Prime Video is available in over 200 countries worldwide except Mainland China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Syria.

Question - Will all six episodes drop onto Prime Video at the same time so I can binge watch it?

Answer - All six glorious hours will drop at the same time so make sure you have tons of snacks, drinks and your mobile on silent for a day of indulgence sat in front of the screen. (Secretly I am hoping that Mitch Benn will do rewrite a new version of "Call me during Dr Who and I'll Kill You" so we can all warn everyone that we will be offline !)

Question - Will I be able to watch it on terrestrial television channels in my country?

Answer - It will be shown on BBC Two in the UK around six months after it premieres on Prime Video. Currently nobody knows if it will get sold to the various terrestrial channels around the globe although we wouldn't be surprised to see it on channels like BBC America and elsewhere over the next year or so.

Question - Will it be available on DVD/Blu-Ray?

Answer - We like to ask this kind of question of author and showrunner Neil Gaiman, and his response was "I expect so.." so watch this space for details.

Question - Will the soundtrack get released?

Answer - Neil Gaiman was also sweet enough to answer us when we asked him about this and his response was "..definitely". Also guaranteed though, is that several people will put together Spotify and Youtube playlists of the songs featured in the series.

Question - Who are the cast?

Answer - If you haven't kept up to date with the cast announcements then head over to IMDB Good Omens and Ooo and Ahhh over who is playing who!

Location: 604 Driskill Street, Austin, TX 78701 USA

FREE Entry for those 21+

Free Good Omens entertainment - All weekend - On the streets of Austin, bickering angels, chattering nuns, demons and Witch Finders will be warning the people of the impending doom.

More information about the Good Omens Garden of Earthly Delights from the press release.

The Good Omens Garden of Earthly Delights carries out the spirits of the unlikely duo and transports guests into the world of the beloved book. Surrounded by a wall of lush foliage, the garden is free of charge and can be reached by entering through a massive winged hourglass on Driskill Street. The duality of the heroes' friendship is ever-present in the space, from the moment guests step foot into the garden and are met at the entrance by angel and demon greeters.

The Good Omens Garden of Earthly Delights is bursting with worldly pleasures, including:

- Beer and wine served from a massive 20-foot tree in the garden center, which also bears prophetic apples and gifts, and mouthwatering bites from the best of Austin's food scene.

- Heavenly and hellish cabanas, relaxing lounges and a pampering area for manicures, hand massages and hairstyling with butterLONDON, Cosmedix and SexyHair.

- An A.Z. Fell & Co. pop-up bookshop, where among the shelves of leather-bound books there are hidden surprises for lucky Good Omens fans.

- A Hellhound Puppy Pen filled with adoptable furry friends from Austin Animal Center, alongside a replica of Crowley's 1926 Bentley.

"With the end of the world imminent, we figured what better place than SXSW to celebrate a few of the good things our world has to offer?" said Mike Benson, Head of Marketing at Amazon Studios. "We've created an immersive experience that Good Omens book fans will love, but also anyone who might like to celebrate Armageddon. You never know what type of apocalyptic creatures may be inhabiting Austin during the SXSW festival, so we are happy to provide an escape for all to enjoy the end-of-times with us."

Inspired by the Apocalyptic signs of Good Omens, the streets of Austin will flood with ominous characters such as bickering angels, chattering nuns, demons and Witch Finders warning festival goers of the beginning of the end. The most harrowing sign of them all is the penultimate motorcycle ride of the Four Apocalyptic Horsemen and their masses of loyal followers at noon on Friday, March 8.

As more world-ending signs unravel across the city, guests who have escaped to the Garden of Earthly Delights will be surprised and slightly on edge as the cataclysmic omens begin to break through the once serene environment.

Throughout the weekend, doomsdayers will be captivated by daily roving entertainment, including the likes of magicians, sword swallowers, fire breathers, tarot-card readers and more.

Earth-shattering live performances on the main stage will include a set of dueling pianists playing pre-Apocalyptic tunes, a string trio strumming classical harmonies and modern-day covers, an interactive, life-size chess tournament with Twitch and a special show from a Queen tribute band."

There will also be two very special events that are available only to pass holders.

Saturday, March 9th: A Conversation with Neil Gaiman

Location: Austin Convention Center, Ballroom D

Time: 3:30-4:30PM

And later that day

"Good Omens:" The Nice and Accurate SXSW Event

2.4 Troll Bridge On Tour and an Update.

The Troll Bridge Tour

Flickerfest (who had the World Premiere of Troll Bridge at their festival in Sydney) have decided to screen TROLL BRIDGE in Perth, Alice Springs and Kempsey in Australia as part of their tour.

Troll Bridge is now part of the Bermuda Film Festival too.

Here are the current dates and where to get tickets.

25 minute version of Troll Bridge can be seen at these dates.

Perth – Fri 2nd March - Flickerfest Short Laughs Comedy tour - Perth

Kempsey –Fri 2nd March Flickerfest Short Laughs Comedy tour - Kempsey

Bermuda – Mon 11th March Bermuda Film Festival

Alice Springs – Fri 22nd March Flickerfest Short Laughs Comedy tour - Alice Springs

Daniel will also be talking about the film at the Irish Discworld Convention at the end of March and screening it again at the Australian Discworld Convention in at the start of April and in his own words "BY GODS THE NEXT MONTH IS INSANE!"

Also insanity withstanding, the wind is whispering that some news is imminent about a premiere elsewhere in the world.

Screenings are announced by Snowgum Films over on their website

A minor update on Festival doings.

Daniel Knight has talked about his concerns that Troll Bridge is just too long for the festival circuit. As a result of his hard work editing the film, there is now a 16 minute length version being submitted to festivals worldwide. It does mean that some festivals will be showing the 16 minute version, whilst others will be or have shown the 25 minutes version. This doesn't affect you, the backers in any way as you will still get the original cut on your DVD/Bluray.

And just in case you are not a Backer and you want to be,

Troll Bridge's contract states that they can continue raising money while they are still in a position to spend money [on the film!] . Once the film has been completed and outstanding expenses covered, SnowGum Films may need to close off DVD availability.

So if you want it on DVD or Blu-ray, order it now as you may not be able to get it later!

2.6 An Early Diary Date from Stephen Briggs

By Stephen Briggs

Regular readers of DWM may know that my plan had been to stage Terry's WITCHES ABROAD in November..?

But sometimes, for compelling reasons, plans have to change. And so I now find myself writing a play I've wanted to stage since the 1970s.

DRACULA

The idea had fallen off the back burner and down the back of the cooker until I recently watched a couple of movie adaptations on Prime. Suddenly I remembered I wanted to stage it and - at the same time - I knew how I wanted to stage it. I parked it again, but then I had to defer 'Witches Abroad'.... it was the golden opportunity!

I'm working directly from the book and I think it's dark gothic plot will perfectly suit the medieval, moody surroundings of the Unicorn Theatre, located in the old Abbey Buildings.

I've been pleased with the initial reaction to Dracula from the cast and from fans. I've even had an unsolicited offer to design the poster from a professional artist that I know from way back. It seems he, too, is a big fan of the book. Very exciting.

And Drac-fans may be interested to know that our Count will wear a replica of the ring worn both by Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee in their Dracula movies.

So - re-set your calendars. DRACULA. 27-30 November. Unicorn Theatre Abingdon. Box office opens 9am on 1 September. Book early. Mwahaha!!!!!

7. Stage Productions

Whilst we would love to get to every event and play to write reviews and articles about them, we just don't have enough time, petrol and a wide enough spread of friends to borrow the couch for the night. But you, our wonderful readers do have the time, petrol and often don't need the couches as the event or play is on your doorstep!

We don't have English degrees here and you don't need one either to write something for Discworld Monthly!

PS. If you know of a play or event that we don't know about (shock horror) , email us. We like the surprise!

All submissions should be emailed to or

Fancy a holiday to the land of the librarian and a universe full of wonders? Though it it would be too expensive?

Then look no further...join Andrea, a life long STP fan and conservation biologist, at her guest house in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Not only can you go jungle trekking to see if you can spot the librarian and his friends. the monkeys (well, not actually friends..more like acquaintances) . You can also go on village walks, do cooking class, go river swimming and so much more.

Have a look at her website and drop Andrea and email or whatsapp with any questions at all. There's a 5% discount if you start your email with your favourite discworld quote!

Green Hill Guest House

.....fyi...Andrea would like to bring your attention to this quote

"It was the special sort of beautiful area which is only beautiful if you can leave after briefly admiring its beauty and go somewhere else where there are hot tubs and cold drinks. Actually staying there for any length of time is a penance."

11.9 The Final Word...

*Rachel here*

We may not be perfect designers, or award winning journalists but we do our best to keep you all entertained and informed about all things Terry. We do have some ethics though. We like our news to be current, up to date and factual with a solid source. We don't like posting rumours but occasionally the source it comes from is 98 percent solid so we will tell you it's a rumour and confirm it when we have a 100 percent confirmation. Our own articles are written by us for us only. You won't find articles from other publications here unless it's a formal press release about an adaptation, book release or event or something we actually wrote for someone else unless they begged us to publish it (OK not begged but some of our lovely friends do ask us occasionally to boost something) . [NB I say we are not award winning but Discworld Monthly did win Website of the Month for Issue 3 back in a different century. It would be nice to win something much more recent, or even just get acknowledged #justsaying]

Whilst you keep reading it, we'll keep on writing it because we love Terry's books just as much as you do.

GNU Terry Pratchett...
